Oak which has been used throughout the centuries as a furniture wood may be of European, North American or Far Eastern origin. European oak has a light coloured sapwood distinct from the yellowish brown heartwood. The ornamental silver grain of quarter sawn oak is characteristic though there is a distinctive figure caused by the growth rings when flat sawn.
